Why first aid matters

If someone collapses near you, you may feel confused and unsure. The first few minutes are critical. Your quick action can save a life. First aid is simple. You only need basic steps and a calm mind.

The very first step

Call for help immediately. In Pakistan, dial 1122 or 115. Do not try to manage everything alone.

Check the area before helping. Stay away from fire, traffic, or electric danger. Your safety comes first.

If someone is not breathing

Tilt the head back and lift the chin. Check for breathing for 10 seconds.

If there is no breathing, start CPR

Place both hands on the center of the chest

Push hard and fast, about 100 times per minute

Continue until help arrives or breathing starts

If someone is bleeding

Press a clean cloth firmly on the wound

Do not remove it if it gets soaked, place more cloth on top

Raise the injured area above heart level if possible

If someone has a burn

Cool the burn under running water for 20 minutes

Do not use ice, butter, toothpaste, or flour

Only use cool water

If someone is choking

They may not speak or cough and may hold their throat
